Performers:
Meeri Pulakka, soprano
Sofia Keto-Tokoi, dance
Spreading into the magnificent exhibition space of Finland's largest art museum, EMMA, the performance Entanglementsis an intertwined moment of two bodies and art. Combining contemporary vocal music and improvisational contemporary dance, the performance by soprano Meeri Pulakka and dance artist Sofia Keto-Tokoi explores themes of closeness, touch, remembering, longing, and finitude. It utilizes the museum space in versatile ways and is a fragmentary, spatially moving entity where the audience can immerse themselves in small moments or follow the work as a whole.
The performance features a solo vocal repertoire from composers such as Enno Poppe, Carola Bauckholt, Rebecca Saunders, as well as Lunula, composed specifically for the duo by Aino Tenkanen. In this work, composed to texts by Hara Hermunen and premiered at the Tampere Biennale, dance is an inseparable part of the composition. Meeri and Sofia have been closely involved in the composition process, witnessing the birth of the text and the music. An equal, open, and interactive interdisciplinarity is realized in Lunula in a special way. These elements are indeed crucial starting points for the artist duo's work and the Entanglements performance.
Alongside the compositions, Entanglements focuses on physicality and embodiment within the performers' instruments. As a viewer, you empathetically feel the performer's movements in your own body. How does it link to the surrounding art? Does the singing sound different? Are the colors and shapes of the artworks highlighted in new ways? These questions, among others, are explored in Entanglements, brought to you by VocalEspoo and EMMA.
