Unfolding across the magnificent exhibition spaces of EMMA, Finland's largest art museum, Kietoutumia(Entanglements) is an interwoven moment of two bodies and two art forms. Combining contemporary vocal music with improvisational contemporary dance, the performance by soprano Meeri Pulakka and dance artist Sofia Keto-Tokoi explores themes of closeness, touch, remembering, longing and finitude. Making full use of the museum space, it is a fragmentary whole that moves through the galleries, allowing the audience either to immerse themselves in small individual moments or to follow the performance as a continuous arc.

The programme features solo vocal repertoire by Enno Poppe, Jarkko Hartikainen and Rebecca Saunders, as well as Lunula, written for the duo by Aino Tenkanen. In this work — composed to texts by Hara Hermunen and premiered at the Tampere Biennale — dance is an inseparable part of the composition itself. Meeri and Sofia were closely involved in the compositional process, witnessing the text and the music take shape. In Lunula, an equal, open and interactive approach to interdisciplinary work is realised in a particular way. These principles are also central starting points for the duo's work and for Kietoutumia.

Alongside the music, Kietoutumia focuses on embodiment and physicality in the performers' instruments. As a viewer, you feel the performer's movements empathetically in your own body. How does this connect with the art surrounding you? Does the singing sound different? Do the colours and forms of the artworks stand out in a new way? These are among the questions opened up by Kietoutumia, presented by VocalEspoo and EMMA.
